How often do my appliances need to be PAT tested?

It all depends on your working environment and the type of equipment you use.

We can recommend a personal schedule based on the guidelines set out by the Institution of Engineering (IET), the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and our years of experience in the field.

What is PAT Testing?

The Electricity at Work Regulation 1989 demands that "As may be necessary to prevent danger , all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger".

In English, all portable appliances with a plug must be tested frequently to circumvent otherwise avoidable accidents.

According to the HSE, there are around 1000 injuries, and 25 deaths as a result of dangerous electrical equipment.

A PAT test ensures that your equipment is fit, and safe for use.

Is it a legal requirement?

It is a statutory requirement. If someone is injured or killed as a result of faulty electrical equipment that has not been PAT tested - insurers can delay, or even refuse payment.

Not only that, failure to comply with the Electrical Regulation can result in a £5,000 fine and/or up to six month imprisonment.

For breaches under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, penalties of up to £20,000 can be given.
