What is Ultra Sustainable?
Created in 2016, The Cheeky Panda set a goal to disrupt the tissue market. It wasn’t long before they became the first tissue company in the UK to be vegan registered with the Vegan Society, helping to save forests worldwide and the thousands of animals that live in them.
In light of the environmentally damaging properties of regular tissue products, The Cheeky Panda wanted to utilise a more sustainable material, and what better than bamboo? After all, it’s the fastest growing plant in the world, growing up to a metre a day!
What’s more, the shipping and product boxes are made of recyclable and recycled cardboard, and any elements of plastic packaging are either recyclable or treated with d2w to make it biodegradable.
As part of their Carbon Balanced promise, The Cheeky Panda donate a part of every pack sold to help protect rainforests with The World Land Trust. Ultimately, a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Analysis by Carbon Footprint Ltd concluded that The Cheeky Panda products produce 65% less carbon than conventional tissue.
Why Bamboo?
Tissue products derived from trees rely on slow growth using fertilisers, and the seemingly better recycled alternatives are often full of harmful chemicals.
Bamboo grows 30 times faster than trees, produces 30% more oxygen and absorbs 35% more carbon dioxide. The 100% virgin bamboo used in The Cheeky Panda wipes is hypoallergenic, organic, grown naturally (fertiliser-free!) and 100% FSC certified.
Cutting down a tree leaves a root system that must be dug up before replanting, a process using chemicals and resulting in soil erosion. Bamboo, on the other hand, behaves like a grass: when cut from the root it simply grows back.
Are Bamboo Products Friendly on Skin?
Bamboo is anti-microbial, meaning it doesn’t collect bacteria and is healthier for people’s skin than traditional tree based-tissue.
Positive feedback from customers suffering with sensitive skin and Eczema suggested that The Cheeky Panda tissues were much kinder on the skin. Further investigation showed that the lack of harsh chemicals and natural growing habits of the bamboo help the products to be dermatologically-friendly as well as sustainable.
