The signature outfit worn by chefs worldwide is rich in both history and culture. Everyone who dons the clothing should be proud that the age-old profession is just as strong if not more than it’s ever been, with tv shows, booming business and countless cookbooks adorning the shelves of the common public.

Chef outfits that we know of today date back to 1822 when French chef Marie-Antoine Careme released his book “Le Maitre d’Hotel Francais”. Though more modern practitioners wear a less formal version, some parts are still prevalent in the overall attire.

Firm believers in expanding UK businesses and the like, we have renovated our chefwear section to provide your restaurants with the clothing to turn your chefs into the real deal.

Here are our favourite choices, from top to bottom.

Traditional Chef Hat: Toque Blanche

The traditional toque blanche represents a status symbol in the kitchen.  Historically, the height of the hat symbolises the rank and seniority of the chef wearing it, the higher it is, the more senior the chef.

Furthermore, the pleats, which are the folded lines around the hat had two purposes. Firstly, it was a fashion symbol, to convey an aura of renown and expertise surrounding the chef. Secondly, the number of pleats would represent the chefs’ expertise in how many recipes he was skilled in crafting.

Modern Chef Hats

For more modern chefs, a function generally trumps out tradition. While the toque blanche is dependant on kitchen; most chefs will likely wear a hair net, skull cap or zandana.

The zandana, in particular, is quite nifty. A pre-made bandana, they’re quick and easy to put on. Customise head size to your liking through a simple toe of the knot, and you can get on with cooking.

Seeing how warm commercial kitchens can get, the zandanas we provide are fitted with thermocool panels to aid air circulation, keeping hot heads cool and cool heads cooler.

Chefs Jackets

Most chefwear jackets are similar in design, except for a few choice differences like buttons and branding across embroidery. They are typically double-breasted so, the chef is comfortable while cooking around the humid temperatures from ovens and grills.

Like with many professions, you can spot a chef by their clothing. Chefs jackets symbolise hygiene and cleanliness, they are a staple for any kitchen environment.  However, both male and female chef jackets do come down to taste, so you’ll find more modern chefs wearing a variety of different designs and colours.

You can view our full range of jackets from short/long sleeve to different colours according to your preference.
