Getting inked is a big decision; not just the design but also where and when to have it. Before any tattoo it is important to do your research; research the salons, research the aftercare and research the design you want.

The spring and summer season are the most popular times to book in for a new tattoo so you can show it off on holidays. However, summer can be a difficult season for tattoos due to the sun; this can make it difficult for your new healing tattoo.

Do’s for your tattoos

We have compiled some top tips on what to do to make sure your tattoo is summer body ready.

  • DO make sure that you moisturise well before and after so your skin isn’t dry and flakey – this is not ideal for new ink
  • DO drink plenty water before and after, this will ensure your skin is well hydrated and in the best condition for your tattoo
  • DO sleep well the night before. Having a good night sleep will make you more alert and able to sit stiller, meaning your tattoo will be neater!
  • DO eat a well-balanced meal before your appointment. Having a good meal beforehand will ensure you have the energy to handle the pain of a tattoo.
  • DO keep your new ink covered, wearing loose clothing will ensure that your tattoo heals as well as it can do.

Don’ts for your tattoos

There are also some things you should avoid before and after your tattoo.

  • DON’T expose your new ink directly in the sun. This can affect the way it heals and can also increase fading. This also includes avoiding UV lights such as sun beds.
  • DON’T wear tightly fitted clothes, this can irritate your new tattoo and affect the healing process
  • DON’T go swimming until it is properly healed. Fully immersing yourself in water subjects your new tattoo to lots of bacteria and this increases the risk of infection.
  • DON’T scratch or pick at your new tattoo, as it heals it may start to scab. If you pick these scabs, ink may leave the lines, resulting in you losing some of the detail.
