For businesses, commercial waste collection is a legal requirement. Companies must ensure that they are disposing of waste correctly, using a legally compliant waste carrier that can dispose of different types of waste for different business needs. General waste, clinical waste and recycling are just three of the waste collection services that, industry dependent, businesses may need. And for some organisations, they can rely on paying their local council to collect this commercial waste. But as we’ve now seen in Dudley, West Midlands, the Metropolitan Council have come to the decision to stop offering this paid for service, plunging hundreds of local businesses into turmoil, and needing to seek out additional, private waste management providers across the Dudley area.

In a statement released 25th January 2025, the council stated that the service was no longer cost effective, with future uncertainty of the uptake of the service being an additional reason given.

This March, businesses with over 10 employees will need to start adhering to Simpler Recycling regulations. These regulations state that relevant businesses must divide their waste up into separate bins depending on waste type, making waste disposal clearer, and in turn ensuring that waste is disposed in the right ways to contribute to a more sustainable country. But this change has proven difficult for councils to organise a cost-effective service.

“With the new requirements coming in, for us to continue to provide this service would require significant investment, including on a specialist vehicle, which would spend long periods of time not in use due to limited demand. It wouldn’t be a cost-effective service for the council to run and it would cost more for businesses to buy the service from us. We just can’t compete with the private sector.” Said Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for environment.

For many businesses, this may come as a shock. But the move makes sense, and would allow these councils to spend money elsewhere. But as for finding a replacement waste management provider, the businesses of Dudley may be unsure where to look. But here at Direct365, we’re here to service the businesses of Dudley with commercial waste management at a reasonable cost.
