In an ideal world, everyone would know how to perform basic first aid. According to a study carried out by the British Red Cross, one in 20 adults feels confident enough to take control if faced with a potentially life-threatening emergency.

While there are plenty of first aid courses out there, these essential skills aren’t typical for younger children to learn. Often adults are expected to know how to perform in these emergencies. However, a recent trial could change the British landscape forever.

First Aid Training In Schools

Beginning this month, the Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced a change to the health curriculum. This trial of first aid lessons will go around 1,600 primary and secondary schools in England.

Primary school children will learn the necessary information, such as how to call emergency services. Secondary school children will learn more complex and essential skills, such as helping those who are suffering from cardiac arrest.

The decision comes after Lord Kerslake’s inquiry from the Manchester bombings, where members of the public tried to help the injured but lacked the skills to help. As firm advocates of first aid training, this launching of first aid in school celebrates a great first step for the future generations.

First Aid Saves Lives

Knowing the basic skills to help save a life gives people the confidence to help in an emergency. A study carried out by St Johns ambulance found that almost a quarter of people interviewed would do nothing if presented with a crisis situation. Expecting a passer-by to know first aid.

Frightening statistics like this go to show how training would make a world of difference, arming people with the right knowledge to do what’s right. One teenager trained in first aid helped save a man’s life when they collapsed onto the floor. Rushing out of the bus, he was on hand to administer aid until the emergency services arrived.

While this was an occurrence outside of the workplace. The standard workplace must have the right supplies and training in place.
