British workers spend on average 3,515 full days at work over the course of their lifetime.
Given that, employees should be safe and certain that the companies they work for, take appropriate steps toward their needs.
In particular, their physiological needs with regards to washroom hygiene.
The workplace (health, safety and welfare) regulations, 1992 set out that anyone you employ is given “so far as is reasonably practicable” adequate and appropriate restroom facilities.
Firstly, what counts as appropriate facilities?
Minimum number of small business restroom facilities
For small businesses like yourselves, the mandatory number of facilities is much less than big corporations.
The Health and Safety Executive recommends the following:
Number of people at work
1-5 = 1 toilet 1 washbasin
6-25 = 2 toilets 2 washbasins
26-50 = 3 toilets 3 washbasins
Toilets used by men
1-15 = 1 toilet 1 urinal
16-30 = 2 toilets 1 urinal
31-45 = 2 toilets 2 urinals
46-60 = 3 toilets 2 urinals
When construction is involved, you may have to replace this with temporary restroom facilities such as chemical toilets.
So, now you know the recommendations, the important question is how often should they be stocked up and cleaned?
Washroom Hygiene: Rule Of Thumb
Even though workplace hygiene has these rules and regulations in place, some employees still shirk away from using employee restrooms.
A study found one in ten employees would rather avoid using the workplace toilet because of concerns about hygiene.
For employers, you must ensure that the facilities are kept clean and in good condition.
Regular maintenance and revisions are key; this means an adequate supply of toilet paper, soap etc.
For instance, with workplace washrooms, you need regular refills of:
Toilet Tissue
Soap Refills
Sanitary bags (feminine washrooms should have a sanitary bin per cubicle)
While keeping in mind, the state of running hot and cold water, suitable hand dryers etc.
The upkeep on a business washroom can spiral out of control if you’re not careful.
