Pubs compete for patrons through drink offers, good food, location and often through playing big sports games. After all, when the sun hits and the world cups on, it’s better to celebrate out then be cooped up inside!

Now while every pub is different, those playing Sky Sports and BT Sports could face further trouble. In this article, we’ll highlight the reported rise in business subscription fees and dangers of illegal screening.

Pub Sports Subscription Spike

pub subscription rise

Inner-city and town centre pubs often pay a higher price in subscription fees by being in a more populated area. While rural areas have less of a fee to payout, every pub is facing increased struggles with the rise in subscription fees with either  Sky and BT Sports.

On top of all the other costs that go into running a business. Such as Staff, stock, and keeping the washroom scented and stain-free. Spokespeople such as Greg Mulholland, chairman of the British Pub Confederation advocated that the price of subscriptions is now unaffordable to most pubs in the UK.

Coupled with the popularity in the sky now weekend passes, owners are understandably uncertain to whether they can cough up funds to keep subscriptions running.

Illegal Sports Screening

Streaming the sports or using another method to illegally screen sports may seem like an easy answer to avoid paying additional fees but it doesn’t come without a cost. In July this year, the premier league and FACT (Federation against copyright theft) teamed up together to crackdown on disrupting illegal sports streaming.

This initiative has seen licensees such as one pub in Kent fined over £6,500 for streaming without the correct permits and licensing in place. This issue undermines pubs who are actively investing in their subscriptions. However, not all hope is gone, FACT and UK enforcement agencies visit hundreds of pubs each week to put an end to this illegal practice.
