Last Friday (17th of October) Direct365 sent two members of our Digital Marketing team, Bryan and Laurence, to St. Martin’s Primary School in Runcorn, for a ‘Primary Futures’ talk.

Primary Futures

Primary Futures aims to “Widen the horizons and aspirations of primary school children, by helping them make the connections between their lessons and their futures”. National Primary Futures week, which ran from the 13th -17th October this year, invites workers or inspirational people from any background or company to visit a local primary school and offer a talk to the children – what they do, why they enjoy it, and how their role relates to what the children are learning in school, such as maths and English or other subjects like art or geography.

The day

Bryan and Laurence travelled down to Runcorn, early on Friday morning, and were greeted by Mr Hallman, the headteacher at the school, who then gave them a quick tour of the school, looking into the classes, getting a taste for the schools enthusiasm and creativity as well as seeing the care and attention that is given to the children, as well as the opportunities presented to them.

The assembly, which took place at around half 10, lasted for around 30 minutes, and saw Bryan and Laurence take it in turns to address the children, and tell them a little bit about their role, why they enjoy it, and how the children’s education can help them with their way into work.

After the main assembly, Bryan and Laurence visited the year 6’s again, in their classroom. This allowed the older students a chance to ask a few more questions with every topic from highschool to holidays and childhood influencers getting mentioned.

What they thought

“Our visit to St Martin’s for Primary Futures week was a great opportunity to share valuable experience with local children who are curious about the world of work that lies ahead of them, which is something we know all about at Direct365. It’s always a pleasure to give something back to the community and I think we enjoyed answering the questions as much as the students enjoyed asking them. By taking part in schemes like Primary Futures it shows that Mr Hallman and the faculty at St Martin’s really care about their students’ futures and it was brilliant to be a part of that too.”

Bryan Clapham – Digital Marketing Executive at Direct365

“It was lovely to visit such a lovely school, which exemplifies the sort of care, passion and energy that is needed to give the children the best possible start in life. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing both the intent interest from the younger children, as well as the curiosity of the older year 6’s, who’re preparing to embark on a new part of their educational career.”

Laurence Kellett – Digital Marketing Executive at Direct365

“The children were very grateful for the input of both Laurence and Bryan when they visited school as part of the ‘Primary Futures’ project. They enjoyed listening to their work experiences and the range of questions, including ‘What do you most enjoy about your job?’; ‘Do you have to speak to people across the world?’ and of course, ‘How much do you get paid?’; showed just how seriously the children took this special opportunity. Many thanks to Laurence and Bryan for their time and honesty.”
