In March 2025, new rules will come into place that change how businesses categorise and dispose of their waste. The legislation, called Simpler Recycling, aims to make the entire process of commercial recycling… you guessed it, simpler.

Currently, there’s some confusion around the rules, with businesses uncertain about where they are supposed to recycle, and more accurately, what types of materials go in which recycling bin. The new legislation aims to make this process clearer, with straight-forward instructions that make clear where each waste type should be disposed of. But what are the simpler recycling rules? Direct365’s latest blog talks you through everything you need to know.

Simpler recycling comes in to force on 31st March 2025, and will impact businesses with 10 or more employees. There are two additional deadlines for other groups, which include all household waste (31st March 2026) and micro-businesses of less than 10 full-time employees (31st March 2027). While local councils will arrange collections for households, businesses must arrange their own collections. But what do you have to do by 31st March 2025, and how does it impact your waste disposal?

What Simpler Recycling Means for Your Business

If your business has less than 10 full-time employees, you have longer to implement these changes.  You have until 31st March 2027. However, if your business has 10 or more full-time employees, you will be impacted from 31st March 2025. The below is more relevant to you sooner. So, it’s best to listen up.

Simpler Recycling rules state that businesses must segregate the following materials into different containers:

  • Plastic.
  • Glass.
  • Metal (cans, tins and foil).
  • Cartons & tetrapaks.
  • Paper and cardboard.
  • Food waste.

This should not cause too much disruption, and as long as you dispose of an even amount of each type of waste, there shouldn’t be a problem with collections. That said, it’s important to stick to the regulations and ensure you’re keeping these types of waste separate.
