You’re having a bad day, and browsing inspirational photo messages just won’t cut it?

You’re not alone on that front. Apparently, people who post “inspirational” quotes on FaceBook are more easily duped in posting and sharing fake news articles as well.

On a more serious note, work-related stress is a serious issue among the UK workforce. The Health and Safety Executive revealed 12.5 million working days were lost between 2016/17 because of this.

As the owner of small business, the duty to keep the ship afloat rests on you. That’s not an easy burden to bear, so making sure you’re more like the MV Astoria and less like the Titanic is a must. Moving on from the ship analogy, here are five practical tips to keep your head above water.

Small Business Stress Management

  1. Seek Support

No one knows the struggle quite like those in the same situation. Have a look to see if your council has any local business schemes. They may be able to connect you with business opportunities.

Additionally, the Federation of Small Businesses offers not just networking with other small businesses but other benefits including legal protection and financial health checks.

2. Use a Stress Ball

Nothing sounds more cliche’ than the stressed out worker squeezing a smiley squishy ball. However, these techniques help in the short-term. Squeezing a ball or spinning a fidget spinner provides a distraction to the problem you’re facing at that moment. Just don’t rely on it.

3. Know when to take a break

Before we start sounding more like a life coach than a small business provider. Let us provide you with this one key tip. Taking a break doesn’t mean checking your emails or watching Youtube. Take some time out to have a chat with your colleagues or have a small walk outside to depressurise from the workplace environment.

4. Have a cup of tea

The miracle elixir. The grand haven to your sensory taste bud collective. Teas great isn’t it? If you’re combating night terrors on what tomorrow may bring, have a cup of chamomile tea before you go to sleep. Chamomile is a cheap, muscle relaxant sleep aid. Just put the brew on and let the drink do the rest.

5. Reduce Stress by Managing Less

There must be duties which take up your valuable time. Taking out the bins, ordering the loo roll, organising a cleaner for your washroom, making sure your devices are safe to use.  As the sole proprietor towards your employee’s duty of care, the list goes on and on. Your required health and safety checklist must read a mile long!
