Leicester is a city that has been in the spotlight in recent times. From being 5000/1 odds at the start of the season, Leicester City won the 2015/16 Premier League title in spectacular fashion. This firmly got the city’s name around the world, and even got it changed to “Lie-chester”.

The achievement of Claudio Ranieri and his team was celebrated around the city, and rightly so. However, in the same period as the Premier League triumph, 2015/16, Leicester didn’t fare as well when it came to waste recycling.

With a national target set at 50% of waste to recycled, reused or composted by 2020, Leicester achieved a rate of 41%, 2% below the national average. Improvement is needed.

Not all waste can be recycled. However, with our commercial waste collection service, you can be sure that your waste will be disposed of in full compliance with The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011. With over 100 providers that we use for our waste collection services, you can be sure that we won’t be beaten on price.

Our service is also tailored to you, so we will come and collect your waste when you want. You also get a choice of bins, from your standard wheelie bin to bigger front loading bins.

For things that can be recycled, we offer a variety of different recycling services that cover different types of waste including cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminium cans and tins, and even computing hardware.

As of now, you cannot recycle crisp packets because they are made from a plastic film and not aluminium foil. If you scrunch up a crisp packet it will reform in some way, whereas foil will stay scrunched up.

Leicester-based Walkers Crisps has history dating back to 1824, with a butcher named Mark Butcher, who with his son, founded a bakery called Walker & Son. Walker & Son specialised in making pork pies. Meat rationing was put in to force during the Second World War. As a result, Walkers had to diversify. They initially looked at ice cream, but health and safety laws prohibited dairy and meat products to be made in the same factory. Instead, potatoes were chosen to be used, as they were not rationed. They continued to experiment with crisps after the war and in 1954, the first flavoured crisps were made, cheese and onion.

In 1971, the crisps side of Walkers was sold to the American company Standard Brands, which itself was later absorbed in to the global food conglomerate PepsiCo. 15 years after the crisps brand was sold, the pie business was bought out by Samworth Brothers. Today, both businesses are still based in Leicester and are as popular today as they have ever been.

Leicester has always been a city of diversity. Today it has big minority communities and this mix of people goes way back to when the warring Anglo-Saxons and Vikings put aside their differences and lived in peace in Leicester. This is said to be how the modern English language came to be because without this mix of different cultures and languages, English would have ended up with more complex grammar like German is today.
