Fixed Wire Testing & Electrical Inspection

Fixed wire testing is an essential part of the electrical safety of your building. While many know and understand what other electrical testing is, a fixed wire testing inspection is a little less known but just as important for legal compliance. To ensure the safety of customers, visitors and staff, having valid electrical safety certification is vitally important. Not only is it part of strict electrical safety regulations (more on that below), but it will actively ensure safety of people around you and give staff confidence that you’re taking their safety seriously. And while electrical safety testing may seem complex, hiring the right fixed wire testing engineers to assess and inspect your system can make it seamless. That’s where Direct365 comes into it.

Fixed Wire Testing for Businesses

Fixed wire testing doesn’t need to be a chore. Although routine checks and electrical testing is a legal requirement, using a reliable and thorough service provider can take the pain away from the process. But what regulations are in place that state you need fixed electrical testing and additional electrical analysis?

Regulations Relating to Fixed Wire Testing:

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - The health and safety at work act is a broad-ranging piece of regulation that doesn’t specifically target electricals. This act requires employers to ensure the health and safety of employees by keeping premises safe from potential accidents.

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 - This is much more focused on electricity, and specifically ensuring the electrical systems are safe and properly maintained on the premises of your business. This act is much more specifically in relation to fixed wiring inspection and testing than the H&S at Work Act.

BS 7671 - The BS7671 is the UK standard for electrical installation safety. This is focused on the design and maintenance of electrical equipment.

For most commercial buildings, a five year fixed wire testing schedule is appropriate. However, organisations may want to get an EICR report more frequently. The benefit of getting an electrical condition report more frequently is that you ensure the safe keeping on your electrics, ensuring that any issues are picked up sooner and can be rectified more easily.  Your electrical condition report will inform you of the state of your fixed wire items, including recommendations or faults/non-compliance. The best place to get EICR fixed wire testing is Direct365.

What Does Fixed Wire Testing Involve?

What Does Fixed Wire Testing Involve?

Our fixed wire testing service is carried out by qualified electricians that have the right knowledge and experience to correctly judge your electrical wiring and produce an accurate electrical condition report. They go through a thorough process to ensure the safety of your wiring meets industry standards and are in good and safe condition.

On the day of your fixed electrical testing our engineer will attend your property and will do both visual and physical tests. The visual inspection will require time spent ensuring the fixed wire setup in your building is safe, with no charring, no cuts or waring in the wires. The physical tests include using specific equipment that tests how the wiring works, and whether it is faulty or working correctly. How long the fixed wiring inspection takes will depend on the size of your property. The electrical safety certificate will almost always be completed in a day. We will always carry out fixed wire testing as quickly and safely as possible. At the end of the fixed electrical inspection, they will let you know whether your building has passed the EICR inspection, and where you need faults repairing. Hopefully, you will be given an electrical condition report in the form of a EICR certificate, proving your wiring is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should fixed wiring be tested?

As we said above, five year fixed wire testing is the usual. But fixed wire testing frequency depends on things such as the environment and the type of electric installations you have. As a general rule, however, fixed electricals should be routinely checked every year, with fixed wire testing being done every 5 years. A report can ensure you are safe, but also reduces any risk of action being taken by authorities if an accident or incident occurs.

Is fixed wire testing the same as PAT testing?

No, electrical fixed wire testing is not the same as PAT testing. PAT testing focuses on portable appliances (PAT stands for portable appliance testing) while fixed wire testing focuses on electricals that are part of the fabric of the building structure. Both, however, are important parts of adhering to health and safety regulations. Contact us today for both services.

Who is responsible for fixed wire testing?

The employer or residential landlord is responsible for ensuring the fixed wire testing is conducted on a premises. These groups are responsible for knowing the frequency of testing and when it next needs to be conducted for regulatory compliance. If you’re looking for more information, you can read our fixed wire testing guide here.

What is an EICR certificate?

An EICR certificate is a fixed wire electrical certificate for your commercial or residential property. EICR stands for the Electrical Installation Condition Report, which is an assessment of the hard wire electrics in a building, and is another name for an electrical safety certificate. Other terms include EICR report, periodic inspection or hard wire testing. Getting an EICR inspection is a legal responsability and fire year fixed wire testing should be done by all organisations.
