Being properly prepared for spills increases in importance depending on the industry and environment you are in. While some liquids and environments are low risk, when dealing with materials such as chemicals and oils. Our range of absorbent and spill control products allows you to properly plan for a spill emergency.

There are a number of regulations that you need to adhere to. These are signed in to law and require you to make assurances that these rules are being followed. Such regulations for spill control are:

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) – This regulation is centered around ensuring the chemicals and substances within the work space are safely stored. You can find further info by following the link above.

Water Regulation Act 1991 – In relation to this, the act states “The main offence states that it is an offence to cause or knowingly permit poisonous, noxious, or polluting matter or any solid waste to enter any controlled waters

Considerate Constructors Scheme – This scheme holds construction firms to account on the way they treat their work and the surrounding areas. Sections of interest in relation to spills are:

  • Avoid pollution and wastage at all times
  • Have fuel-oil spillage clean-up equipment available

There are are numerous oil and gas regulations that protect both the environment and physical harm, and act as guidance to follow for your business. More information on these can be found here.

There are several types of absorbent that can help you clean up after a spillage. The type you will choose is dependent on what the spill is and where.

There are 4 main classification of absorbent. These are:

  • Grey – general purpose absorbents
  • White – oil and fuel
  • Yellow – chemical absorbents
  • Granules – varied options/capabilities

Grey – General absorbent pads

These grey pads are perfect for absorbing general spills, from oil and grease to water and general liquid.

White – Oil and fuel

These oil and fuel absorbent sheets work by placing them upon the spill, and their advanced hydrophobic properties allows them to be used on both land and water.

These are suitable for oil, fuel, solvents, and most petrochemicals.

Yellow – Chemical

These types of materials are used to clean up chemical spills. Chemical spills can be dangerous because of their potentially poisonous or corrosive elements.

Ideal to have for chemical plants and manufacturing plants.

Granules – All forms of spill

Granules are great because they come in different forms, of which can absorb different types of spills. For example:

Multi-Zorb

Granular clay that can absorb multiple kinds of spill without granular breakdown. This leaves your floors clean and safe.

New Safety Thread

Non marking and non-dusting. Suitable for use on strong chemicals.

Light Plus

Paper pellet granules.

E-Sorb

fire retardant wood fibre granules.

ELCEF Fibre

Biodegradable oil selective fibre.

Having the correct products for spill control will allow you to meet your regulatory needs and ensure your staff and working safety. Below are a list of the spill control products.

Socks

Absorbent socks are perfect for ‘wrapping’ around your spill, stopping it from further contaminating an area and absorbing the spill.

Cushions

Cushions are exactly how they sound. They are absorbent items that can be placed on top of spills to soak up the liquid. They can also be placed below a leak to absorb it and placed in a drip tray to soak up the contents.

Pads and Rolls

Pads and rolls are used to soak up different sizes of spills. Very flexible, pads and rolls can be used to simply clear up a small spill, catch a small drip or absorb a larger spill. These are ideal to have around workplaces where water may be trailed in or leaks may be small yet frequent.

Booms

Booms are floating barriers that are predominantly placed around spills in water, usually oil and chemical spills. As well as keeping a leak contained, booms often also contain absorbent padding to help in your spill recovery as well as containment.

A boom consists of the upper, external float and a lower netting that sinks below the surface and stops additional leakage.

Drum Toppers

These are exactly what they say on the tin. These circular toppers are for containing small spills on the top of drums.

Drain Matts

Drain mats are specifically designed to be placed over your drainage inlets to project drainage systems from excess spills.
