What is one thing you can lose, never get back, or ever find again?

From the lost work of Nikola Tesla to the library of Alexandria.  A whole wealth of human knowledge lost forever. In the case of fire, there’s a wealth of history lost to the flame. As preservers of education and the bastions of well-kept knowledge, how can you better protect classic work and untouched files?

Here are the possible ways your books could be targeted by fire.

What is book burning?

Traceable all the way back to the rule of Caesar. The destruction of Alexandria led to the loss of inestimable amounts of cultural knowledge In part, this was a casualty of war, whereby Caesar was forced to set fire to his own ships, which inevitably spread from the docks to the library.

Unfortunately, in more modern times the act of book burning became enforced by royal authority to suppress ideas. In the 1600s, the author John Milton’s books burned across English universities following a command from the king.. Dissenting views that questioned the status quo became synonymous with book burning.

When it’s not books but personal information; this aspect of burning knowledge and information takes on a less sinister tone. Getting rid of out-of-date sensitive information isn’t quite as damning as getting rid of the works of Gandhi. Being vigilant over this practice and condemning it where it stands is the best approach to this issue.

Now here’s what happens when the fire comes unintentionally, and how to react.

University Fire Safety

Earlier this year, the Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh building erupted into flames. Unintentionally I might add. While the cause was accidental, the extent of the damage comes down to a lack of fire safety prevention.

The lack of engagement with the fire safety action plan meant that this wasn’t even the first fire the university building had encountered. By the second fire, a sprinkler system hadn’t been implemented, even after the recommendation for one.

So, how do you prepare your establishment against the threat of fire?
